5 things to do with your new...Wii

If you are one of the 4 million plus people who picked up a Wii in December you have probably been fighting the flab with Wii Fit, stomping Goomba's in New Super Mario Bros, or saving the land of Hyrule in Twilight Princess. But games aside, what else can Nintendo's white wonder offer you?

We won't go into all of the Wii Channels that are now available, we did that here, but here are 5 others ways to enjoy your Wii:

Play games on Virtual Console and WiiWare

Of course it's highly likely that you know about the Wii's online game services, but to recap... The Virtual Console is home to plenty of gaming greats from years gone by. Among the obvious Zelda, Sonic and Mario greats there are also some overlooked gems that deserve attention, my picks would include; Ristar, Sin and Punishment, Act Raiser and Bonk. It's worth noting that many games require the use of the Classic Controller which is available at an additional cost.

Over on WiiWare finding the best games can be tricky as there is a lot of fluff, but titles such as World of Goo, the Strongbad series, Nyx, Bit Trip Beat and my recent fave, You Me and the Cubes, are all fantastic and can stand proudly against the best PSN and XBLA releases.

Earn free games

Although the Wii is extremely easy to connect to the Internet it seems that Nintendo wants more people to do so. Indeed, there are TV ads airing in the UK at the moment promoting Wii-Internet connection.  Another initiative is the recently launched Ambassador Programme which encourages Wii owners to help their friends get connected.  As a reward both parties receive 500 Wii points to spend. Nice.

It gets even better, as an Ambassador connects more and more people, they are rewarded with free Virtual Console games. When an Ambassador hits 10 connections, they earn gold status, and can then download any NES first party title for free. Once an Ambassador hits 20 connections, they earn platinum status, and can download all first party and third party titles for the NES, SNES, and N64, all for free! Pretty amazing, if unlikely.

Stream Movies and TV

Although the Wii doesn't have the full range of multimedia capabilities displayed by the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 (such as DVD or BluRay playback) it does have has a few other tricks up its sleeve. The most recent of which is the ability to stream TV and movies.

In the US you will soon be able to experience Netflix via your Wii. To get it, you need membership and an additional disc to boot up the service, which is available from www.netflix.com/wii.

It's doubtful that the picture quality will be up to the standard of the Netflix services on the 360 or PS3, but it's still a welcome addition and is sure to find an audience.

In the UK the Wii has stolen the march on the Xbox 360 by joining the PS3 in offering free BBC Iplayer support. There is a dedicated Iplayer channel now available from the Wii Shop. It is simple to use, quick to load, offers decent picture quality and features parental controls. Highly recommended.

Photo Channel Puzzles

Picture it. Your gran is over for the day, you have tried to get her to play Super Mario Galaxy, but it's all in vain. It's time for simpler pleasures.  Time to slip some family photos on to an SD card, then play with them in the Wii Photo Channel.

The simple doodling and editing tools are fun enough, but the Photo Channel's hidden treasure is the Puzzle Generator. Having your pictures turned into 12, 24, 48 or 128 piece puzzles and then trying to beat your own completion time is compulsive and amazingly competitive. My gran played this for at least 3 hours straight!

Sure, this is a very slight recommendation but it is fun nonetheless. So there!

Download Nintendo DS Demos

If you are a human being then there is every likelihood you own a Nintendo DS. So far we have seen surprisingly little interaction between the Wii and DS, but one feature well worth checking out is the Demo Download service that can be found on the Nintendo Channel.

The demo line-up changes reasonably often and it's a great chance to try some games that you might have missed.  Indeed, it was the demo of Picross that won me over and resulted in a swift purchase.

It would be good to see a broader line up, and to be honest this should really be a channel in itself, but nonetheless it is well worth a weekly visit.
