I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 Review

There's no shortage of competent twin-stick shooters available for your Xbox 360, so why turn to the Indie store for answers? In short, for I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1.

The recent weeks and months have seen the Indie score come of age, and though there are plenty of so-so offerings at the 240-400 Microsoft Points Mark, there are now a surprising array of superior bedroom-creations on sale for 80 points (a mere 68 pence) -- and that's after the free trial.

Z0MB1ES is one such gem. With gameplay as solid as most full-price Arcade shooters (though not as refined as Geometry Wars 2) it's its character and sense of humour that set it apart, making it reminiscent of the heyday of 8-bit computer gaming's surreality.

Knowingly lampooning almost every other twin-stick in existence, the player is faced with jarringly incongruous waves of attackers: bacteria one minute, polygons the next, followed by the titular undead hordes. Combined with surely the best theme song on any Indie title (the lyrics begin "Welcome / To my Game I put zombies in it..." -- you get the idea), you are left with a genuinely funny, entertaining, if disposable experience.

However, if viewed in the context of Zombie Apocalypse, a full-price Xbox Live twin-stick, you could argue that what we have here is a vigorous satire on lazy, cynical videogame cash-ins. Zombie Apocalypse pounced upon twin-stick popularity by throwing the ever-popular zombies, not to mention gratuitous gore into the mix; all while offering no gameplay innovations whatever. And it's this distinction that elevates Z0MB1ES from an entertaining half-hour of LULZ to a timely and relevant piece of art. SRSLY.
