Rock Band Iphone Review

Can you squeeze the Rock Band experience into the palm of your hand?

It turns out that yes you can.

The experience is scaled down (making the World Tour mode rather slight) but it looks and feels very much like it's console cousins.

The playing interface has been simplified to 4 basic tap inputs but it works well for Guitar and Bass modes, even if it doesn't quite replicate the feeling slinging a Stratocaster over your shoulder.  The vocal mode is curious as there is no singing at all, instead you tap different pitch lines to ensure the vocals play.

Naturally the highlight of the game is drumming, simply because your taps feel very tactile.  It's the most satisfying mode by some distance.

In all modes Overdrive works by swiftly tilting the iphone. It sounds OK in theory, but in practice it's hard to keep your fingers engaged with the onslaught of notes as you wiggle the device about.  (If the game is updated the option to quickly tap the top of the screen would be much appreciated.)

Along with career and quickplay modes there is local mulitplayer plus Facebook integration and of course it supports DLC, which is just as well as with only 20 songs you'll soon be needing some new tunes. Character customisation is entirely absent but it's hardly missed, and graphically the note runways work perfectly.

Due to the multi-touch functionality of the iphone there is no need for an awkward peripheral (ala Guitar Hero On Tour for DS) and because of this it's a much, much better game. Small quirks aside this is as good as you could expect from a portable Rock Band and at £5.99 comes recommended.
